Explore Syria

The Explore Syria project was an initiative organised by CG in 2019 with the goal of showcasing the diversity of cultures, religions, and ethnocultural backgrounds within Syria. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was delayed, and yet to be completed.

The project consisted of virtual visits to each of the 14 Syrian provinces, during which participants explored the local culture through cuisine, music, history, and art.

·       Cuisine: Participants in the Explore Syria project had the opportunity to experience the cultural food of each Syrian province through virtual visits. Food is an important way that cultures manifest themselves, and the local cuisine of each province was a key part of the journey.

·       Music: The project included live performances by local musicians, showcasing the folklore music of each Syrian province. These performances provided an opportunity for participants to learn about and appreciate the cultural music of the region.

·       History: Locals from each Syrian province were invited to present 15-minute reflections on the key historical events and figures of their province. These presentations gave participants a deeper understanding of the cultural history of each province.

·       Art: Local artists were invited to create mixed media paintings that captured the true spirit of their province. These paintings were exhibited as part of the project, celebrating the variety of cultures that Syria has to offer and promoting the work of community artists.

The project aimed to conclude with an exhibition featuring the 14 mixed media paintings created by local artists from each Syrian province. These paintings were meant to capture the true spirit of each province and provide a unique perspective on what Syria is in the eyes of the artists.

The exhibition was intended to celebrate the variety of cultures that Syria has to offer and promote the work of community artists. It was also a way to bring the project to a close and provide a tangible representation of the virtual visits and cultural experiences that participants had during the project. By showcasing the paintings together, the exhibition aimed to provide a comprehensive view of the diversity of cultures and perspectives within Syria.
