At Common Ground Community House, volunteers are the lifeblood of everything we do. We started as volunteers, and the commitment of those who joined us has been pivotal in undertaking and successfully implementing all our projects since day one. Our volunteering opportunities offer a chance to be a vital part of impactful initiatives that shape and empower the Arab Canadian community. Whether you are passionate about data visualization and customization, community research, economic resilience, or web tools for civic engagement, we have diverse roles where your skills and enthusiasm can make a meaningful difference.
Data Visualization and Customization
We aim to establish a community research base, starting with the re-use of existing data to shed light on topics vital to the Arab Canadian community. For instance, we can utilize data from recent research studies, such as the one I participated in with the Environcs Institute for Survey Research on the lived experiences of Syrian refugees in Canada five years post-arrival. Customizing data from sources like Canada Statistics, particularly focusing on the Arab demography section, could be a valuable avenue.
Building an Alliance for Community Research
Collaborating with like-minded organizations, scholars, and professors is crucial. Our goal is to form a cohesive team to apply for research grants addressing specific issues in our community, ranging from representation and housing to healthcare. Identifying interested Arab scholars across Canadian universities, establishing contact, and devising a research agenda will be key.
Economic Resilience Project
Within this initiative, two pivotal branches will be the focus. The Trade Skills Sector aims to identify and promote the top 10 professions in Ontario with high demand, facilitating training, certification, and employment opportunities. Simultaneously, the Entrepreneurial Support branch concentrates on developing programs to identify individuals with genuine entrepreneurial spirit. We provide essential business startup skills, encompassing market studies, business plans, feasibility studies, and accountancy. Our goal is to establish connections with funding opportunities, including investment banks and angel investors.
Developing web tools that empowers civic engagement
This may necessitate transitioning to more versatile platforms like WordPress ( we are currently using Google Sites ), a step we're open to taking if deemed necessary.
Outlined below are features we envision incorporating into our website for the benefit of our members. The implementation of these features may necessitate a shift to a more functional platform, and we remain receptive to exploring such options.
1. Ward/Constituency Locator: Enable users to easily identify and locate their respective wards or constituencies, enhancing civic engagement by providing personalized information based on their local representation.
2. Local Problem Reporting System: Implement a platform where community members can report and identify local issues, fostering a sense of responsibility and involvement.
3. Resource Hub Based on Location: Provide a resource hub offering information, services, and support specific to users' local areas, encouraging active participation by connecting members with local resources and initiatives.
4. Community Forums and Discussions: Create a space for community members to engage in discussions and share ideas, facilitating the exchange of thoughts, concerns, and solutions to promote active citizenship and community building.
5. Local Events Calendar: Maintain an events calendar featuring local activities, meetings, and gatherings, encouraging participation by keeping members informed about events in their area, fostering a sense of community.
